Protein from plant cells

Has anyone tried extracting total protein for electrophoresis from plant 
cells?  We ground cells in SDS/ mercaptoethanol/ glycerol/ tris buffer
with 
a hand homogenizer, but found absolutely no bands on SDS PAGE.  We are 
wondering how this is possible.
