To this list of principles I would add:
Plants differ from animals by producing spores by meiosis and gametes are
formed later. They differ from Animals, some Protista, and Fungi by
having cellulose cell walls, and they differ from Protista and Monera (and
Archaea) by having embryos.
I have a difficult time getting college students to think about meiosis
for any purpose other than producing gametes. They learn about
meiospores, but when they are asked about meiosis later, they resort to
the first thing they learned - animal meiosis and gametes.
