Dear Plant Ed Folks,
Thanks to all who replied regarding my question about Engelmann's
(correct
spelling this time!) experiment. No one has found the identity of the
bacterium used, although I must say David Kramer expended a great deal
of
effort and came up with a very nice list of references wherein the
answer
may lie. Thank you, David.
It occurred to me that without even knowing what Engelmann used, it
might
be possible to re-create the experiment with E. coli, which is easy to
come
by and to grow in large quantities. It is positively aerotactic
(attracted
to oxygen), and so might serve just fine. If anyone knows of other
bacteria that are equally easy to get and grow and that are even more
strongly aerotactic than E. coli, please let us all know.
Thanks a bunch,
Kathleen
