Roxanne,
We have been doing an exercise in class for years with fava bean epidermal
peels. While the seeds are available from many catalogs as 'broad beans',
we have have gotten the best results using seeds from Vermont Bean Seed
Company (English Broad Bean # 01267N). We typically plant them 6 - 8 weeks
ahead of time under greenhouse conditions. They prefer relatively cool
temperature and moist soil. Most importantly they cannot have any water
stress in the days before you carry out the exercise and they need to be
taken to the dark for 24 hours ahead of time so that the stomata will be
closed in your dark control.
Have fun!
