Hi,
Just thought I would say _something_ in protista, any activity being
better than none at this point?
So here I am, I'm reading protista. I'm Tom Doak, in the lab of Glenn
Herrick. We are interested in MAC development in Oxytricha, a
hypotrichous ciliate. Primarily in internally eliminated sequences. And
in transposons/selfish DNA. Turns out that there is a family of
transposons that are preciselly eliminated in MAC development, allowing
reversion of MIC/germ line insertional mutations in the MAC/soma. The
mutational load of the transposon is thus dropped to close to nothing.
There is a similar story in Euplodies. Rather clever. The question is,
is it the transposon being smart, or just the host getting rid of the
transposon, it's in the interests of both.
So there it is, some sort of a warm up.

Yours,
Tom Doak
