In yesterday's announcement of the Sixth East Coast Regional Meeting on
Protozoology, I mentioned harness racing in Saratoga, but failed to detail
the major platform session and keynote address. The session to be held at
the Axelrod Institute of the Wadsworth Center (transportation is provided to
Albany) is entitled "What's in the water? ...waterborne protozoa" and is
chaired by J. Keithly, R. Soave & E. Braun-Howland. It includes topics such
as Epidemiology, Identification, Drug Development, Molecular Diagnosis, and
HIV. Don't get the impression that us "free-living" protozoologists will be
underrepresented at the meeting! To date there are a flood of talks on
foraminifera and other free-livers...
The keynote speaker is Dr. Miklos Muller of Rockefeller University. His talk
is entitled "Amitochondrial Protists: Puzzles in Metabolic Organization and
Evolution." Dr. Muller is founding editor of Molecular and Biomedical
Parasitology, and has authored over 150 papers on the biochemistry and
molecular biology of amitochondriate protozoa. He is a past winner of the
Ciliate Tie and the Hutner Award. Join us to see if he is also a winner at
the harness track!
