Apologies for cross-postings:
The annual course in Systematics and Ecology of Diatoms will again
be offered at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory this summer. Gene Stoermer,
University of Michigan, will be the primary instructor, and Matt Julius
will assist. This is a concentrated, field-oriented class, suitable for
students of any level who desire a general introduction to diatoms and
advanced students who wish to utilize freshwater diatoms in systematic,
ecological or paleontological investigations. Because of limited
enrollment, maximum ten, individual student needs can be accommodated. A
limited number of research spaces for senior investigators are also
available. The regular class is four credit hours and runs from 18 June
to 14 July 2000. An additional week-long Diatom Clinic (16-21 July) will
be available, primarily for consultation and exchange by professional
diatomists. Students who have taken the regular course may participate,
and gain one additional hour of course credit, by submitting a research
paper. Students, particularly those electing the five week sequence, are
encouraged to bring their own research materials. Because class size is
limited, early enrollment is encouraged.
