CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
53rd ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PHYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA
1 - 7 August, 1999; America's Center, Saint Louis, Missouri
ABSTRACTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY 1 APRIL, 1999
The 53rd annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) will be
held within the formal format of the XVI International Botanical Congress
(IBC). The IBC, held once every six years under the auspices of the
International Union of Biological Sciences, will bring together scientists
from many disciplines within the plant sciences. Logistically, the IBC will
span from Sunday, August 1st to Saturday, August 7th. General facts and
history of the IBC, the 1999 scientific program, registration/abstract
information and forms, listing of and links to the web pages of cooperating
societies/organizations, and general information pertaining to Saint Louis
can be obtained at the IBC web site (http://www.ibc99.org/).
The program will consist of invited oral presentations (within Plenary
Lectures, Keynote Symposia, and General Symposia only) and contributed
poster papers. Bold Award papers (see below) will be oral presentations
within an organized symposium. All participants at the Congress (plenary
speakers excepted) will be limited to one oral presentation and the
convening of one symposium. Each person is limited to two (2) poster
presentations as presenting author, irrespective of whether he/she will give
an oral symposium presentation at the Congress.
Poster Information:
Panels will be available for mounting of posters, beginning 12:00 noon on
Sunday, August 1st. Posters will be displayed through the entire Congress
until 12:00 noon on Friday, September 6th. Each poster panel will measure
120 cm x 120 cm (ca. 4 feet x 4 feet). The distance from the bottom of the
panel to the floor will be approximately 30 cm (ca. 2 feet, 5 inches). The
panel number will be placed in a 15 cm x 15 cm (6 inches x 6 inches) block
in the upper left corner of the panel. If the presenter intends to bring a
pre-formatted poster, its width cannot exceed 120 cm. Specific information
concerning recommended technical layout, font size of lettering, etc. is
presented on the IBC web site (http://www.ibc99.org/program.html#posters).
Submission of abstracts should be by Electronic-Mail:
An electronic form, available on the IBC web site
(http://www.ibc99.org/abstrins.html), should be used for submitting
abstracts. If electronic mail is not possible, a 'hard copy' may be sent by
regular (or air) mail to: The Conference Secretariat, XVI IBC, c/o Missouri
Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 299, St. Louis, MO 63166-0299 USA. Abstracts for
the entire Congress will be compiled by the IBC and bound for distribution
in Saint Louis. Abstracts also will be available on the IBC web site prior
to the Congress.
Abstracts must conform to the specific guidelines/format dictated by the
IBC. Briefly,
1. Abstracts may not be longer than 1025 characters (187 words,
5-letter average) or more than 19 lines, including title and author(s).
2. The title of the work is to be in capital letters, followed by the
author(s) name, and brief institutional address. If more than one author,
underline the presenting author. Typographical symbols may be used to link
author with institution.
3. The text of the abstract follows.
4. E-mail to the Secretariat (If mailing, please do not bend or fold
through the Abstract box itself).
5. Abstracts are due on or before 1 April 1999.
Publication of PSA Abstracts:
Abstracts submitted within the PSA portion of the Congress will be published
within the July, 1999 supplement to the Journal of Phycology. If you desire
to have your abstract published, please send a copy of the abstract directly
as text within the body of an electronic mail message to:
psa at nola.srrc.usda.gov. Do not submit abstracts only to the PSA - Abstracts
must be submitted to the IBC to ensure inclusion within the congress. Do
not encode the document or send the text as an attached file. The abstract
will be entered into a word processing program and reformatted as necessary.
If electronic mail is not possible, a 'hard copy' may be sent by regular

before 1 April, 1999.
Bold Award (Students only):
Student members can indicate if they wish their presentation to be
considered for the Bold Award. All Bold Award presentations will be oral
and presented together within an organized symposium. Bold Award
participants must file the proper forms with Dr. Frederick W. Zechman,
Chair; Bold Award Committee by 15 April, 1999. Application forms will be
sent as a companion E-Mail announcement to this abstract call and will be
available in January, 1999 on the PSA web site

Hoshaw Travel Award (Students only):
Student members can apply for a limited number of awards to assist in their
travel expenses to the annual PSA meeting. All other factors equivalent,
students who will present their research at the meeting (lecture or poster)
will be given priority. Successful applicants will be notified prior to the
meeting and the awards will be presented at the meeting. Applicants must
file the proper forms with Dr. Louise Lewis, Chair; Hoshaw Travel Award
Committee by 15 April, 1999. Application forms will be sent as a companion
