POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION AT THE U.S.D.A./Agricultural Research
Service =20
ANNOUNCEMENT NO: RA-99-07H =20
POSITION: Plant Biologist/Environmental Scientist
LOCATION: USDA/ARS, Beltsville, MD
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: An alternative to direct land application of
untreated animal manure is to grow algae for feed on the nutrients =
present
in the untreated liquid manure or digested manure liquids. In this =
project,
the research associate will characterize nutrient uptake (NPK and
micronutrients), growth and biology of algal species present in mixed
species algal turf scrubbers (ATS) grown using animal manures. In the
first phase of the project, the research associate will use laboratory
scale scrubbers to characterize algal growth, on digested
dairy, poultry, and swine manures. In the second phase of the project, =
the
research associate will characterize algal growth, nutrient uptake, and =
the
fate of pathogens using a pilot scale ATS system and digested dairy =
manure.
The research associate will alsocollaborate with aquaculture scientists =
to
begin conducting an evaluation of the feed value and acceptability of =
the
harvested algae.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Ph.D. in plant biology, aquaculture, environmental
science or related field. Experience in algal biology preferred.
