PHD FELLOWSHIP AVAILABLE IN SYSTEMATICS OF MARINE ORGANISMS
I am seeking a bright, motivated student to do a Ph.D. dissertation on sea
anemone systematics to begin studies in August 2000. The student will be enrolled in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of the
University of Kansas (KU) and will also be associated with the KU Natural History Museum. The research project will be a generic revision of the Corallimorpharia - anemone-like animals that may act
ell as print form. Relevant skills will be taught; applicants need not possess them but their possession will be an advantage in the competition for the fellowship. For information on the sorts of
QUALIFICATIONS The successful applicant will be admissible to the Ph.D. program of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of KU (www.ukans.edu/~eeb), and have a strong interest in system
1) An excellent academic record (the KU graduate program requires that any student with an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0 be admitted on probation);
2) Acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), including the Biology Subject Test, within the past five years. (For those living outside the US, the Subject Test may be taken after arrival
3) Favorable letters of recommendation.
4) Non-native speakers of English must score well on the TOEFL to be admitted to the KU graduate program (at least 570 on the paper-based or 230 on the computer-based exam).
FINANCIAL SUPPORT A maximum of five years of financial support will be provided - it is expected the degree will be completed in this time. The fellowship is contingent on the granting of funds by
Assistant, Curatorial Assistant, or Research Assistant.
OTHER In the American system, a (post)graduate student enrolls in courses
for the first 2-3 years of study. The program is individually tailored,
and for those with a strong background, coursework may be minimal. One of
the major objectives of the coursework is preparation for an oral
qualifying examination. Research may be begun while courses are being
taken, but it intensifies after the oral exam is passed.
The research will involve field as well as laboratory work.
