WORKSHOP on
PROTISTS AND THE MICROBIAL LOOP

ORGANISATION
Centre Universitaire Luxembourgeois
Séminaire en Sciences de l'Environnement
&
CRP-Gabriel Lippmann
Cellule de Recherche en Environnement
et Biotechnologies (CREBS)

The importance of heterotrophic protists has been largely overlooked until
recently. Now, protozoans have been recognized to be cornerstone organisms
of the aquatic food webs.

As for metazoans, the dynamics of protozoans is regulated by both resource
availability and predation by upper trophic levels. However, the methods
applicable to study the top-down and the bottom-up interactions in the
microbial loop differ in many aspects from those used to study "classical"
aquatic food webs.

The present workshop aims to bring together during one day researchers from
Belgium, Germany, France and Luxembourg who are interested in the
biological processes related to the microbial food web.

The major aim of the workshop is to present a state-of-the-art about the
techniques enabling the study of top-down and bottom-up control of the
protozoan dynamics in aquatic ecosystems.

FIVE INVITED COMMUNICATIONS are scheduled. The provisional titles of the
contributions are:

10h00 J. Boenigk
(Universität zu Köln, Germany)
Protozoa - bacteria interactions: feeding mechanisms and food selectivity

11h00 K. Muylaert
(RUGent, Belgium)
The use of dilution experiments to measure grazing rates on phytoplankton,
bacteria and heterotrophic protists.

13h00 V. Jacquet
(CRP-Gabriel Lippmann, Luxembourg)
Importance of bacterivory by protists in the Reservoir of Esch-sur-Sure
(Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg)

14h00 I. Hamels
(RUGent, Belgium)
Trophic interactions in the microbial food web of intertidal sediments.

15h00 C. Joaquim-Justo
(ULg, Belgium)
Use of fluorescently labelled protozoans to investigate the predation of
rotifers on protozooplankton

Location and registration

The workshop will be held in the
Centre Universitaire
"Bâtiment des Sciences"
3rd floor
162a, avenue de la Faïencerie
in Luxembourg city.

There is no registration fee. The registration desk will be open at 9h00 on
December 15.

Workshop language will be English

A poster session is scheduled. If you interested in presenting a poster (75
x 100 cm), please return the Registration Form including a provisional
title for your presentation, before December 10.
