a stain for living cells?

Hi,

I'm trying to grow Chilomonas (a cryptomonad) on agar plates.
Unfortunately the cells are
colourless, making any colonies that might arise very difficult to
see.

Does anyone know of a dye that would bind to the cells without
harming
them? I'd like to add such a dye to the agar to make small
accumulations of cells more visible.

Thanks,

Rosie
