Hello all. Please excuse any cross-postings. I have an interesting
question for those interested in analyzing algal data, both
phytoplankton and periphyton. I have had several conversations lately
with other phycologists about calculating diversity indices or other
metrics based on biomass or biovolume and not just abundance. The issue
arises because of the diversity of many algal assemblages, especially
where the assemblage may be numerically dominated by blue-green
pico-plankton or another small species, but the pattern looks quite
different when you look at biovolume or biomass. Any thoughts? I
would be happy to publish responses to the list. Thanks, Ann.
