There is a postdoctoral research position (DFG-Project, BAT IIa) open at the
University of Tnbingen / Zoolog. Institute / Section of Cell Biology

We are a small research group focusing on gene expression in the protist
parasite Trypanosoma brucei, causative agent of African Trypanosomiasis. The
protist parasite lives freely in the blood of its mammalian hosts and
escapes the immune response by antigenic variation of its cell surface coat.
The coat consists of glycoproteins, and the genes encoding these proteins
are uniquely transcribed by RNA polymerase I. Our vision is that expression
of these essential genes is dependent on transcription factors with no
counterparts in their host organisms and that these factors are suitable
targets for specific parasite inhibition. We have recently established a
homologous in vitro system which supports RNA polymerase I-mediated
transcription in this organism (Laufer et al., 1999, MCB 19:5466-5473), and
we are in the process to purify and functional characterize the
transcriptional machinery.
