Evolutionary origin of "higher" eukaryotes
A postdoctoral position is available to study the phylum-level
taxonomy of "higher" eukaryotes, i.e. plants, animals, fungi and
slime
molds, using combined protein sequence data (Baldauf Am.Nat.
154:S178-S188; Baldauf et al Science, 290:972-977).
Recent results have shown that combined data can strongly
resolve deep
evolutionary questions, where single gene phylogenies often fail.
The
postdoctoral project is designed to investigate the origins of the
major groups of multicellular eukaryotes by developing four parallel
protein data sets. Emphasis will be on the protistan origins of major
taxa with scope to pursue finer level taxonomy within a candidate's
group of interest. Applicants need a PhD in molecular, evolutionary
or microbial biology or a closely related discipline. The work
involves cell culture, DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and phylogenetic
analysis. The position is funded by the BBSRC at salary spine 6 and
