Research Technician in Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology
A Research Specialist II position is available to conduct laboratory
and field research associated with the joint University of South
Carolina/SC Department of Natural Resources Algal Ecology
Laboratory
(AEL). Research focuses on harmful algal blooms, and tasks
include
identification, isolation, and culturing of phytoplankton,
determination of phytoplankton community composition, and
conducting
bioassays and physiological experiments with phytoplankton field
samples and cultures. An individual with expertise in microscopic
analyses of phytoplankton, background in phytoplankton taxonomy, and
phytoplankton culturing skills is required. Background in molecular
DNA- or RNA-based techniques, microbiological techniques, and HPLC
pigment analyses are pluses. Individuals are expected to be
well-organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as
part of a team. Development of independent research projects, further
technical training, and educational opportunities are encouraged. The
position requires a Masters degree in related field and at least 1
year experience, or a Bachelors degree and at least 3 years
experience, or equivalent.
This position is through the University of South Carolina, and is
located at the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, South
Carolina.
Entry salary: $27,696 to $31,653 plus benefits, depending on
qualifications. This is a grant-funded position.
