Dear colleagues

I would like to draw your attention to 2 positions opened for 2004 at
the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique related to
Phytoplankton.

These positions are permanent positions to be filled in one of the
French CNRS laboratory working on marine phytoplankton (e.g.
Roscoff,
Banyuls, Villefranche, Marseille...). Deadline to get the application
forms is January 9, 2004.

More information is available at

N=B0 30/05 - 1 Experienced research scientist
"Taxonomic diversity within key genera of marine phytoplankton :
molecular and genomic approaches"

This position is targeted at specialists of molecular and genomic
approaches. The person selected will work on the taxonomic
diversity
within key marine phytoplankton genera. This phytoplankton has a
ubiquitous distribution in the world oceans and an important role in
the functioning of marine ecosystems. A combination of
morphological,
physiological and molecular approaches is expected; it should
result
in a modernisation of the concept of species for the marine
phytoplankton

     Section 12 : Plan=E8te Terre : enveloppes superficielles -The
Earth's oceans, atmosphere and land surface

Prioritairement sur 4 th=E8mes/priority will be given to the following
themes

            N=B0 12/02 - 3 Charg=E9s de recherche de 1=E8re classe
            (Experienced research scientists) N=B0 12/03 - 5 Charg=E9s de
recherche de 2=E8me classe (Junior research scientists)

Priority will be given to the following themes :

A)Physico-chemistry of the atmosphere based on satellite data

B) Variability of the coastal dynamics and of the exchanges
between
the open ocean and the coastal zone through in situ observations

C) Isotopic geochemistry and present-day- and/or paleo-
biogeochemical
cycles

D) Marine plankton taxonomy: functional structure of pelagic
communities and fluxes of biogenic matter

Profile D is spelled out below.

The intensity of the carbon biological pump in the pelagic domain is
controlled by the structure of the communities, which is in turn
controlled by nutrient availability (N, P, Si, Fe,.). New
biogeochemical models have to take into account the dynamics of
dominant species that directly control the degree of coupling
between
the cycles of the major elements (stoechiometric variations of
uptake
and regeneration, ratio between autotrophy and heterotrophy,
nutrient
co-limitations). Techniques in cellular activity tracing must be
developed along with measurements of fluxes and stocks by
isotopic
and chemical methods. The potential candidate should be able to
demonstrate knowledge in the identification of key species or
groups
in the major productive systems, and expertise in biogeochemical
measurements (isotopic tracers and cell activity tracing, allowing
the
quantification at different scales, from organisms to communities.
The
goal is the elaboration of new relationships and realistic
parameterizations, obtained through the study of natural
populations,
useful for biogeochemical models, including more specifically the
essential processes of co-limitation.
