Mad cow disease is not caused by bacteria. It is caused by an infectious
protein, a prion, which almost certainly doesn´t consume any oxygen by
itself.
Just because this was posted in bionet.organisms.schistosoma, I would
also like to point out that this disease isn´t caused by a flatworm
either.
