Hello,
We have realised that the gap4 help system, as distributed in the 1996.0
release of the package, will fail on many systems. Two problems with this
exist:
a) Help will fail with an error message if /usr/local/bin/wish4.0 isn't
installed on the system. A dialogue box will appear containing:
Error: couldn't execute ".../help.tcl": No such file or directory
b) If wish4.0 is installed on the system, but the insecure X
authorisation method of "xhost" is in use then the help program will
be brought up when requesting help from gap4, but with a blank
display. We recommend using the more secure xauth X security
mechanism instead of xhost.
A solution to both of these problems is to reconfigure the help system.
This can be done by fetching a new copy of the "$STADENROOT/tables/gaprc"
file from our ftp site. See ftp://ftp.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/pub/staden/gaprc
for a copy.
If you have edited your gaprc file then you will need to make the changes
by hand. This is simply to change the HELP_PROGRAM definition from
"tcl-external" to "tcl-internal". Note that users can also use netscape
(if a recent version is installed) to view help by changing the
HELP_PROGRAM from "tcl-external" to "netscape".
We apologise for the bug. If you notice (or have noticed) any other bugs
then please report them to us promptly. Reporting problems as soon as
possible yields prompt bug fixes, which helps everybody.
