Primer design in Gap4

When designing primers within the Contig Editor, a score value is listed
in the Output Window along with GC, Tm, and length. What does that score
mean? When I started using Gap4, I just used the first primer that was
chosen. Now that I noticed the score values, I've been using primers with
the highest scores. However, those primers have not been working. Am I
doing something wrong? Thanks.
