[ Apologies if you get this twice - I posted yesterday and it seems to have
found a void to jump into. ]
This is to announce the free release of a Gap4 database viewer and the Trev
trace viewing program; distributed in binary form for several Unix platforms
and MS Windows platforms. Unlike the full release, this is free to commercial
users too and it does not require a licence key.
The ftp location is ftp://ftp.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/pub/staden/gap4_viewer/. I
recommend that you read the README file there first.
Note that this is a beta release. It is also the first publically available
example of Gap4 running on Windows. Although we've been running this in
various guises for a couple of years now, as always there is a chance of bugs
slipping through undetected. So _please_ do report these to us at
staden-package at mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk.
Gap4 database viewer
--------------------
The database viewer will allow people to view Gap4 assembly projects without
requiring a full install of the Staden Package. (The viewer download is about
1/6th the size of the full package.)
The viewer has been compiled on Compaq Alphas (Compaq Tru-64 Unix), Sun
Solaris, Linux (Intel only - no Macs yet), SGI Irix and Microsoft Windows (any
of the win32 platforms). [ Note that the SGI binaries may not work on all SGI
systems as we are having problems with our Irix installation at present. We
hope to rectify this problem soon. ]
For easy distribution of assembly projects the viewer now allows all the trace
files to be tarred into a single file. The traces will then be extracted
directly from this tar on demand. This both improves disk storage (especially
on Windows where the file "blocking factor" can be as much as 32K) and ease of
use.
Trev
----
Also included in the viewer distribution is Trev - our trace editor and
viewer. This supports the usual formats (ABI and SCF) along with some newer
highly compressed formats (CTF and ZTR). Trev also works on all our supported
Unix platforms and Windows.
(If there is sufficient demand we may repackage trev as a separate download.)
James - on behalf of the Staden Package development team.
