This is both to report a problem to people and to ask for some feedback.

Some people are observing that the Staden Package licences we issue for
Windows XP systems do not work. We have investigated this ourselves and found
that we too had problems after installing Windows XP.

Using a simple debugging tool to monitor file opens, reads, and closes we
could observe that gap4 was indeed opening the licence file and reading it,
but apparently not getting what it expected. However Windows XP claims
adamantly that the file was never accessed, so clearly an OS bug there.

We couldn't track this problem down further without needing a proper debugger,
so we installed Microsoft Visual Studio on the system. To do this it required
upgrading a few OS components, and in doing so cures the licencing problems!
So we're now starting to wonder if this is an OS bug (that isn't fixed by
service pack 1).

So firstly the warning - at the present time we may find it hard to get
windows xp licences working. We're trying our best to resolve this.

And now the feedback I need from you, our users. If you are using Windows XP
and the Staden Package, please let me know so I can gather information on how
widespread the problem is. Also what service packs have you installed, and
have you installed the microsoft compilers?

Thanks,

	James
