axolotl whole-mount in-situs

We are having an incredibly difficult time getting whole-mount in-situ
hybridizations to work with axolotl embryos. We can get some probes to
work perfectly, but other probes don't work at all. We are using Richard
Harland's Xenopus protocol almost to a tee. Have others found axolotls
inherently more difficult to work with than Xenopus, or are we just doing
something stupid? Do there exist any established successful modifications
to Harland's protocol that have been adapted to axolotls?
I'd be very grateful for any input.
thank you very much
AJ
