Dear George,

By now hopefully, the book has arrived safely. I do not know if any of
John's colleagues on the Uro net would be interested or not but I am
sending you the latest information on what John's fellow professors hope
to do in memory of John's 32 years as a professor in the Biology
department.

The idea of a scholarship in John's name was first mentioned at the
memorial service and I contacted Dr Currrie about its progress in late
January.

The following is the quote from the e mail that Dr David Currie sent me on
Monday, Feb 25th.

"The possibility of a scholarship in John`s memory looks out of reach.
Apparently, a scholarship fund must have a minimum of $10,000 before
disbursements can start, and it isn`t obvious where we would get that kind
of money. On a more modest level, many of my colleagues have contributed
to a fund that we would like to use to give a prize to best honours thesis
presented each year, until the money runs out. Perhaps we could display a
plaque in the foyer of GNN,[the initials of the name of the biology
building which like all others on campus are named in honour of former
deans, rectors or other important persons in the university's history] and
add the name of the winner each year. Since John was involved for several
years in the honours seminar / thesis, we thought that this might be nice
memorial to his efforts. I wish it were possible to do more, but I am not
sure how."

If you think it appropriate you can send the following information on to
anyone who might be interested and they can send their donations directly to:

Dr David Currie, Chairman
Dept of Biology
University of Ottawa
30 Marie Curie
Ottawa ON K1N 6N5

Sincerely,

Mary Armstrong
