MOVIES: MULTIPLE ANSWERS...
Here are a few answers of some questions/remarks that popped
in my e-mail rather than on the news-group. For the benefit
of all I am making here a compiled answer. I find this more
useful than having many little files answering individual
questions, as inevitably some miss the answer....
Here are the subjects:
1- IBM MOVIES: WHERE ARE THEY ?
2- MPEG FORMAT: WHY NOT?
3- UPLOADS FOR SHARING
4- Jean-Yves's ANNOUNCEMENTS
5- ANONYMOUS FTP SITE CONTENT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- IBM MOVIES ( Portion of a letter I wrote to David Dunigan)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Concerning computer movies again I have created (so far) 2 movies that are
in some sort of IBM format called FLI. The video situation in the IBM-compatible
is in a state of complete Non-Standard in the sense that there are may different
formats, completely incompatible with one another. I am using the FLI format
because I found a program, from Germany, that allows me to create the FLI movies
directly on the Silicon Graphics which is more convenient for me [and thus I don't
have to deal with DOS or Windows...]. The FLI format (obviously!) exists as an old
FLI and a new FLI format, the newer format being sometimes called FLC and is capable
of supporting sound.
I have created 2 FLI movies so far that are on my anonymous system:
- Herpes
- Rhino16 with 2 missing pentamers
The you need a FLI player and I found one that has worked for others. It is
also stored as a "zipped" file. My SGI unzip program does not allow me to
unzip it, but others have unzipped it. The unzipping gave them errors while
unzipping but the player worked fine they said. The player is from the "Autodesk"
company.
The zipper player is found in:
/pub/QuickTime-QuickPICS/Herpes-EM/for-PC/waaplay.zip
The FLI movies are of different length so you can test-drive the player
before downloading the big files:
DIRECTORY FOR FLI: /pub/QuickTime-QuickPICS/Herpes-EM/for-PC/viruses.FLI
FILES:
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp other 1690370 Sep 7 21:06 Herpes.fli
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 96020 Sep 8 14:56 HerpesP.extra.short.fli
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 177556 Sep 7 21:18 HerpesP.short.fli
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 874476 Sep 14 16:15 r16.fli
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 301030 Sep 2 18:39 r16.short.fli
These FLI movies are in the "new" FLI format. The author of the program just
sent me a new version that will allow me to create "old format" FLI files.
FLI is, by far, not as good as QuickTime, but it works under DOS which is
why I decided to deal with this, so I can "reach" more people.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2- MPEG FORMAT: WHY NOT?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>Hi, thought I'd drop a line about the movies. Have you considered putting
>the movies in .mpg format? This would allow pc, mac and Unix users to view
>your movies. Univ at California Berkeley has freeware for producing the mpg
>format - the big advantage is the portability to many different types of
>platforms. I have the mpg encoder software and am familiar with it - if you'd
>like, I'll convert some still frames to an mpg movie for you. Also, there are
>free versions of the mpg player for pc's,macs and Unix. Just thought I'd forward
>the info - :^)

This is an idea I had this summer as well. I found 2 mpeg encoders, one from
Berkley and one from Stanford. I had some trouble compiling the Berkley one
but eventually got both to compile. However I have not pursued this because
of time constrainsts. I am definitly interested in this because there are
a lot of discussions that this is going to become a standard within a year
in both hardware and software.
An MPEG movie has the advantage of being very compact indeed. It easily beats
the current QuickTime. I suspect that MPEG might be incorporated in QuickTime
at some point.
At present an MPEG movie does not play very fast on a Mac but there is a utility
to convert any mpeg movie to a QuickTime movie.
Don't know how is the performance on a PC.
It indeed would be great to have to worry about only one format!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So netters look for MPEG movies in the near future, our friend J.Kirk (Hummm reminds
me of a certain Captain!) will make some MPEG movies for us!, Youpie!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3- UPLOADS FOR SHARING :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
> > > ANONYMOUS FTP/ VIROLOGY VIDEO
> > >ANONYMOUS FTP: FREE
> > >-------------
> > >After presenting my quicktime movies at the American
> ...
>I must thank Chris and Peter for replying, now I know what to do!!
>>But about the PC versions: I downloaded waaplay and a couple of the
>shorter movies for PC, and they are WONDERFUL!! I totally blew out
>the cerebral cortices of a couple of grad students, showing them
>herpes and rhinovirus capsids (and the sparkplug) rotating around,
>and then in about 15 min I managed - using RasMol for Windows - to
>make my own movie of bean pod mottle virus capsid protein subunit
>rotating about its long axis, in framework and spacefill modes.
>Unreal!! Talk about lending a sophisticated touch to lecturing on
>virus structure...icosahedra will never be the same again. Now all
>I need is a sufficiently uninterrupted ftp session to get the long
>movies in!
>>Jean-Yves, you are an international resource. More power to your

THIS prompts me to remind you that my anonymous ftp site
(rhino.bocklabs.wisc.edu = 144.92.19.130) has a folder in which
you can UPLOAD files, that I can then make publicly available.
The folder called /donor_uploads is where you can deposit your
goodies. Nobody else can see the files there so you can even
upload all your secret files to (only) me!!!!!!! that is if
you have any secret files :)
So hopefully, ladies and gentlemen we'll have a FLI movie of BpMV
pretty soon on the site, direct from South Africa! Thanks Ed.....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4- Jean-Yves's ANNOUNCEMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As it is explained in section 1- above the archive of the newsgroup
should be kept at sci.bio.sci, but they may not be there. Therefore
I just decided to archive my own postings, at least the significant
large ones reporting new information or (like this one) answering
questions. I'll call it JYS.archive and place it in the top layer, at the
same level as /pub
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5- ANONYMOUS FTP CONTENT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THERE is a file called "ls-lR" which contains the name of all the files archived
in this site (well almost!). ls -lR is the standard unix way to create a long
listing recursively of all directories, in other words make a table of content
of all folders. It is a simple text file.
For the sake of the newsgroup posting I include it here but will cut it out for
archiving this file.
Hope that this is useful,
Sincerely,
Jean-Yves
