Retroviruses are diploid in the sense that the particles appear to
contain 2 copies of the ssRNA genome - which are linked together in
an apparently not-altogether-too-well-understood manner (according
to Fields et al., 1990). Could have something to do with the
unnecessarily complicated replication mechanism (template switches,
etc.)
