I believe that the reference was to the rattlesnake round-up you
mentioned, which is not a Southwestern activity, but limited to areas of
Texas.  This is pertinent to your argument relative to the outbreak in the
Four Corners area.

As for the virus "waiting until 1989-90 to make its appearance" it is
clear from the restrospective serological data that this virus (or a very
similar one) has been around for quite some time.  Check out the MMWR
reports of this during the past twelve months.
