Not all strains of HeLa cells will support poliovirus replication. I
think it was the HeLa S3 from ATCC that would not support viral
replication in our hands. Any primate cell line should be a suitable
host, CV-1, Cos-1, etc. as long as it has the receptor, for that matter
receptor-positive mouse cells should work. As for the differential strain
yields, as I remember it, type 2 was the lowball in our hands, although it
could be because we had a mouse adapted strain of type 2.
