A recent contribution on this subject is the very first time I have
ever heard of HeLa S3 cells not supporting poliovirus replication. In my
direct experience, at least three different "strains" of HeLa S3 cells
supported type 1, Mahoney polio just fine. Two of the S3 strains were
monolayer dependent cells while the third grew in either monolayer or
suspension cultures. I would be curious if others know of S3 cells that
fail to grow polioviruses and, if cited, what effect, if any, polio has
on those cells. Other primate cells, particularly a variety of monkey
cells, also grow polioviruses well.
