As far as I understand it, if you don't have lactase to break down
milk sugar (lactose), the stuff ends up lining your gut epithelium,
preventing absorption of food and inducing diarrhoa. Many mammals
(seals for one, cats also, I think) have no lactose in their milk
and if you deal with orphans from these species you have to be very
careful to avoid too much cowsmilk in their formula.
