Ralph Cordell,
It's nice of you to reply, and I agree that most vets would not go
the route of saliva, or corneal imprint testing in bats, but I do
know a few. I did not get that much detail from the the original
post and was not sure whether the animal was just a wild bat or an
exotic pet. Because veternarians have an important role in public
health issues concerning zoonotics, such a contact would allow the
disposition of the situation to be determined. However, if there are
people who may require treatment, then there is of course no
alternative, but to perform FAT on fresh brain tissue. I am always
concerned about offending various groups such as animal rights in
this type of case. Thanks again.
