POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
MOLECULAR VIROLOGY
LABORATORY OF MARK YOUNG
A 2-3 year NSF funded position is available immediately for a
molecular virologist to study fundamental mechanisms of spherical virus
assembly and disassembly.
The biological phenomena of virion assembly, maturation and
disassembly is particularly suitable for determining the underlying
principles of protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions. The long term
goal of this research is to determine how the detailed molecular
interactions occurring during virus assembly and disassembly influence and
regulate virus infectivity. We use the small spherical virus, cowpea
chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV), as a unique model system to determine the
detailed chemical role protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions play in
assembly, maturation, and disassembly.
Our experimental approach combines molecular and structural tools.
We have developed both in vitro and in viro CCMV assembly and disassembly
assays. We have a collection of naturally occurring assembly/disassembly
mutants and X-ray structure based site-directed assembly/disassembly
mutations. The successful candidate will investigate the biochemical and
structural basis of these CCMV assembly/disassembly mutations. The
successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in close cooperation
with our collaborators at Scripps Research Institute (J. E. Johnson) and
Purdue University (T. S. Baker).

A Ph.D. in virology, biochemistry, or related area is required.
Experience in molecular virology, molecular biology and/or biochemistry is
