Yes, the concept of "strain variation" has been important in prions.
The existence of many different strains of scrapie (at least 15,
defined by latency, lesion patterns differ) which can be propagated in
the same inbred mouse strain. These can transmit serially without
changes in properties in the same mouse strain homozygous for a single
PrP genotype. However, I'm not sure this helps with the original
question...
