Just a suggestion: Instead of blowing a fuse if somebody gives you a raw
deal, simply tell yourself that yes, you did just run into a rude,
inconsiderate jerk, and then chill out and do whatever damage control is
necessary. I always find it easier to chill out if I think of an accurate
description of the person who just got me riled. I just have to be careful not
to say what I think - or I might get my 96 pound self thrown accross the
room some day.
Another way to keep your cool is to remember that unless someone is in a
position where they can do you direct physical or financial damage, you really
can ingnore that person. So someone just insulted you in public? You have two
choices - 1 redirect that insult back at the originator or 2 ignore it and
have the originator feel really stupid.
Students: If you are stuck with a lousy professor or advisor, just go with
the flow and make a list of all the things that you will never do to your
students when you hit that rank. And be sure to keep that page and look at
it every year before you give your first lecture. The majority of professors
are not monsters, some of them have simply forgotten what it is like to have
six exams in three days.
