Why *I'm* here

Hi everyone! I've been lurking about this group for a couple of months now
and thought I'd chime in a bit. I'm a fifth year grad student at University
of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I'm in Plant Biology, specifically
physiological ecology. I study how shade-developed hardwood tree saplings
acclimate to canopy gaps that form in forests.

I read this group because I like to here how other women in science deal
with the particular problems we, as women, have in this male-dominated
field (I feel that, despite changing trends, science still is male-
dominated--my field especially). The recent discussion about marriage
and career (I'm married, no children) and crying in front of others are
two examples of such topics that I have read and and appreciated. I
especially like knowing that I'm not the only one to experience these
things. There are a few good women role models at this school, but
its a bit less intimidating to discuss on this network because of the semi-
anonymity.

I agree with another poster who said it was good to have some men posting
to this goup; however, it seems that some people (of both sexes) have some
real antagonism towards the opposite sex. I'd like people to try to be more
courteous to one another, this group is for the exchange of ideas, not a
format for attacking one another (IMO).
