but it doesn't get any better. I recall a friend of mine noting that -- in
faculty business meetings -- she would make a (to my mind) sensible point and
no one would hear it. Then some little while later a male, senior colleague
would make the same point and..... I had a conversation with another colleague
recently -- female -- at a high administrative level in my university. She
said that she had been "saying something for quite a while, but no one
picked up on it until recently." I said -- "was the person who reintroduced
it male? Gotcha!!!! Maybe we need to go to the "how to survive in
organizations" literature to find the solutions -- how to avoid getting your
ideas co-opted, etc. Also -- maybe we need to figure out why we are not being
heard. Maybe it's not "gender prejudice" but gendercultural language
differences -- a la that neat book on miscommunication between men & women.
