Here at Baylor we have a program for summer students just finishing
college, which is not specifically for minorities but has lots because
of the ethnic diversity in the Houston area. There is also something
for high school students which I know less about. It's called the
High School for Health Professions. Their number is 713-741-2410.
When I was at MIT they had a summer program for college juniors. They
brought African-American students from black schools in the Deep South
up to MIT for the summer, and paired them with labs where they could
do some research. They had to present their work at the end, they had
a lot of social things for them, and they seemed to get a lot out of
it. The student that was in my lab ended up coming back to MIT to
work with the only African American postdoc we had in our department,
and I think as a result of his positive experience he decided to do an
MD/PhD instead of just an MD. He was a really bright kid with
excellent skills in research, so we were all really happy to hear
that.
