I'd like to add another:
"A Midwife's Tale", the annotated diary of Martha Ballard, who was a
midwife in Maine soon after the War for Independence. I forget the name of
the author, but the book won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. The
author also draws on other sources for Martha's village from her lifetime,
and reconstructs a fascinating view of life in the post-colonial period.
It may also be the earliest existing diary of a woman healer in the US,
but I don't know that for sure. Great book.
