For Star Trek fans, I would also recommend Janet Hagen's Uhura's Song. 
Lt. Uhura, for once, does a lot more than open hailing frequencies... her
skills as a musician and a linguist are emphasized.  In addition, a
wonderful female doctor/researcher is featured as a key player.  One of
the best Star Trek novels around, I think!
