Natasha Loder the author of the Next Wave article "U.K. Women: Still
Second Best in Science?" has recently had a very good article published in
Research Fortnight (11 November).
This article looks at the steps taken, in the wake of the study
by Christine Wenneras and Agnes Wold in Sweden, to review evidence of
sexism and nepotism in the allocation of grants by British research
councils and funders. The UK government's Office of Science and Technology
is about to publish the results of this internal review which is expected
to show that no evidence of sexism has been found.
As Agnes Wold says in the Research Fortnight article, "If women in England
are treated equally if the apply for grants and positions, it must be
something else which keeps them from advancing, because there are surely
not more female professors in England than in Sweeden."
It will be interesting to see how active UK funders are in investigating
and dealing with this "something else".
