In the March 16th issue of Chemical and Engineering News there was an
article "House Committee Looks at High-Tech Gender Gap". Evidently, The
House Committee is having a hearing on HR 3007- the Commission on the
Advancement of Women in Science, Engineering, and Technology Development
Act. Rep. Constance A. Morella (R-MD) is involved in this committee.
The purpose of this bill is to set up a high-level commission to study
the factors that have contributed to the relative lack of women in
science, engineering and technology. Panel members will include the
director of NSF, NASA administrator, NIH director, NIST administrator,
as well as private citizens. People may want to write to Rep. Morella
expressing their opinions regarding these issues...
According to the article, 1993 data collected by NSF, determined that
women make up 22% of the science and engineering workforce and 13% fo
doctoral chemists in the workforce are women.
