Dr. Florence Lief, an internationally renowned virologist and personal
friend, died this past Sunday after a chronic illness. Florence was
present when I took my first baby steps, and while I did not see her very
often after I was about 10 years old, she was a huge inspiration to me
throughout my life. I last saw her at my cousin's wedding two summers ago,
when she was debilitated but still able to interrogate me about my
academic standing :). While in the terminal stages of emphysema about two
weeks ago, as she lay in her hospital bed awaiting treatment, she asked
the respiratory therapist "so, where did you go to school?" Education and
family were the most important things in her life. As a young widow in her
early 40s she became one of the first female PhD candidates in
bacteriology (microbiology) at the University of PA - and she did this
while raising three young children, with no husband, making a daily
commute from Long Island. Florence was somehow always able to balance
family and career, never sacrificing one for the other. I hope I can live
up to her....
