I opted for a faculty position in an up-and-coming department at a
non-research I university. My postdoc boss at the medical school referred
to it as a "lateral move." I don't look at it that way. Our labs are
better equipped than most research I labs, even at my postdoc institution,
because we work on the community property principle. It's not my
fluorometer or someone else's flow cytometer. We've put in USDA equipment
grants for instrumentation that can be used by more than one faculty's
research, and we've been successful in getting those funds. In addition, I
LIKE my colleagues. Most of them have balanced lives between family,
work, and other activities. Our research is also getting exposure at the
national level. Although there are times that I doubt the wisdom of my
move (especially now at tenure time), I think the move was a good one.
