The answer is, there is no consistency. Some institutions are family friendly, others do the mandated minimum.

Resources for this are found on my women in biology site, under the "personal lives" section (http://pingu.salk.edu/~forsburg/bio3.html#fam).

Here are some relevant articles:
>From the Chronicle of Higher Education, "Academe's annual baby boom"
http://chronicle.com/free/v45/i42/42a00101.htm

The baby book from UC Davis
http://wrrc.ucdavis.edu/babybook/default.html

Science's Nextwave (may require subscription)--mostly about postdocs, but parts may be relevant to others
http://nextwave.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2001/04/04/4?

Reminder: the women in biology page (URL below) has now grown to five pages, with links on everything from career planning for PhDs to dual career couples to ethics to tenure. It has received
citations from Science Magazine, the New Scientist, Links2Go, and The Beagle, among others. Check it out and send suggestions for additional links!
