Hi all,
I just saw today an article on the NYTimes web site about the
introduction of quotas for women in politics in France. I thought even
though it is not science, that it would interest many of the
women-in-bio followers. The web site is:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/04/world/04FRAN.html?pagewanted=all
Perhaps some of our European contributors would like to comment on it
for us. I was quite suprised by the huge difference in percentages of
women in politics in different European countries (for example Sweden
has 45% women, versus France with only 8.7%). Do these numbers have any
reflection in the numbers of women in science as well? And can anyone
tell me why they think there are these huge differences? Are there any
lessons here that we could use to improve our representation in science?
cheers
Kim
