Hi Gerd,
I don't know if you are looking particularly for
"modern" scientists, but I think Maria Sybilla Merian
would be a very interesting topic for such a paper. You
can find a short biography in English (unfortunately,
most literature on her seems to be in German or Dutch,
because these are the countries where she lived) on
http://www.gymsm.krefeld.schulen.net/ausstell/eausstel.htm
She was a very fascinating woman, lived from 1647 to 1717,
studied insects and botany, went on an expedition to
Surinam (Dutch-Guyana) with her 21 year old daughter in
1699, and I think was the first to describe correctly the
metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly. She funded her
research by all kinds of odd jobs - well, just look at
the page mentioned or type her name into a search engine.
Regards,
Sabine
