Although I'm no professional, I do have one advice -
For a while - let go. School isn't so important that the suffering of
the whole family should be preferred to missing a while. Another thing
that might be relevant is dislecsia - smart kids with problems coping
with a specific angle of leaning - it could be writing or spelling or
math. There are psychologist that specialize in this.
