Ph.D. ASSISTANTSHIP
IN PLANT MOLECULAR SYSTEMATICS/
EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY
ONE 50%, 3-year Ph.D. Assistantship is available starting Jan 2003 in
the area of Plant Molecular Systematics/Evolutionary Ecology at the
Institute of Systematic Botany of the University of Zurich (Dr.
Elena Conti). The Ph.D. project will focus on the phylogeny and
evolution of breeding systems and polyploidy in the genus Primula.
Perspective students are expected to have received their Bachelor's
degree or equivalent by the start of the Ph.D. program. Good
knowledge of the English language is required; some knowledge of
German desirable; familiarity with primary scientific literature
expected. The ideal candidate will have some documented
experience/knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
molecular biology, phylogeny reconstruction, evolutionary ecology,
plant breeding systems, molecular evolution, molecular development.
The selected candidate will be expected to help in teaching (2 to 3
hours per week, for 6 months per year) and in writing proposals to
help fund his/her research.
The Institute of Systematic Botany of the University of Zurich has a
state-of-the-art molecular systematics lab, with several PCR machines
(including temperature gradient), ABI 3100 16-capillary automated
sequencer, digital gel imaging apparatus, and a state-of-the-art
morphological lab, with microtomes, SEM, and TEM facilities.
Greenhouses and open areas in the garden are available for live plant
collections used in research. Access to growth chambers is possible.
A herbarium of over 1.5 million specimens and an excellent library
are also available. The Institute of Systematic Botany is part of
the newly established Plant Science Center, which includes research
groups in the plant sciences from Zurich and Basel and cutting-edge
equipment and resources (microarrays, real-time PCR, pyrosequencing,
etcS<caron>).
Zurich is an international city of about 350,000 people in the heart
of Europe and has been recently rated as the city with the highest
quality of life in Europe. Excellent public transportation exists
within the city, to the nearby mountains, and to the rest of Europe.
