DEPARTMENT CHAIR

POSITION: The University of Missouri-Rolla invites applications for
Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences to begin Fall Semester
2003. We are seeking applicants who have evidence of accomplishments
in research, teaching, and an understanding of administrative
activities which support the faculty in their academic efforts. The
successful candidate should have an ongoing publication record in an
area of biological sciences, a record of successful competition for
external grant funding, and experience in mentoring students, staff,
and faculty. The Chair will be expected to participate in
undergraduate and graduate education and therefore must be committed
to excellence in teaching. Candidates must have a PhD and be eligible
for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
in the Biological Sciences Department.

DEPARTMENT: This search is taking place in the context of rapid growth
of the Biological Sciences Department. The successful candidate will
play a major role in integrating an expanded Biology faculty into UMR
initiatives aimed at interdisciplinary research with existing
strengths in engineering and science departments on campus. The
Department of Biological Sciences offers BA and BS degrees in General
Biology and the MS degree in Applied and Environmental Biology and
anticipates further growth to include the PhD degree in the next five

UNIVERSITY: UMR is part of the University of Missouri System, with
sister campuses in Columbia, Kansas City, and St. Louis. The Rolla
campus is recognized as "Missouri's Technological University" with
major emphasis in engineering and science. Approximately 5000 students
are enrolled in degree programs within the School of Engineering, the
School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Strong academic programs, small class size, and excellent facilities

COMMUNITY: The city of Rolla, with approximately 16,000 residents, is
located near the center of the state of Missouri, in the foothills of
the Ozarks surrounded by oak-hickory forest, in a region with numerous
