POSITIONS IN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY
THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
I write to call attention to several positions that the Department of
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology expects to advertise in the next few
months. The Department, formed about a year ago from a larger department of
Biology, includes more than 30 faculty members, many of whom hold half-time
appointments in the Museum of Zoology or the University Herbarium. About
10 openings are anticipated in the next several years. We are actively
building a major program in evolutionary biology and consolidating a strong
program in ecology. Pending approval, the following tenure-track positions
will be advertised in this and other suitable outlets:
-- EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS AND GENOMICS. Areas such as population genetics,
quantitative genetics, genetics of speciation, and evolutionary
developmental genetics are of particular interest.
-- EVOLUTION AND SYSTEMATICS OF PLANTS. This joint search with the
Herbarium has been approved. Researchers in areas such as the evolution of
development, molecular evolution and systematics, or the evolution of
adaptations, from the perspective of plant diversity, are encouraged to
apply.
-- EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY OF INVERTEBRATES (other than insects). This
joint search with the Museum of Zoology has already been announced. Pending
approval, we will interview individuals whose research on contemporary
topics in evolutionary biology uses invertebrates and who will provide
intellectual leadership in the use of the Museum's superb collections
(especially of mollusks).
-- COMPARATIVE EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY OF INSECTS. In this search, joint with
the Museum of Zoology, we will seek candidates who use phylogenetic or
other studies of insect diversity to address contemporary questions in
evolutionary biology, and who will provide intellectual leadership in the
use of an important research collection.
-- EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY. Researchers in a wide variety of subject areas,
such as evolution of pathogen/host or other interactions, ecological
genetics, tolerance limits, and community assembly will be encouraged to
apply.
-- DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM OF ZOOLOGY AND UNIVERSITY HERBARIUM. The search
for a Director will seek candidates who combine academic leadership ability
with strong research in any area of evolutionary biology of plants of
animals, including systematics, phylogeography, organismal function (e.g.,
behavior), and evolutionary genetics or genomics.
Other than the Director, these appointments will probably be filled at the
Assistant Professor level, but outstanding candidates for more senior
appointment will also be considered. Women and minorities are encouraged to
apply, and applicants should note that the University of Michigan is
responsive to the needs of dual-career couples.
